Safety and Compliance Engineer

Major Function

The Safety and Compliance Engineer will be responsible for leading all aspects of product safety and regulatory compliance. The position will support project teams in new product development, sustaining and is responsible for coordinating product safety activities across SLPE and reports to our SR Director, Global Engineering & Design.

Essential Function
  • Responsible for assuring new/modified product designs and instructions comply with Regulations, Product Standards and SLPE internal safety requirements.
  • Participate in design/project meetings, Design Reviews, FMEA’s, risk analysis and other activities necessary to make design and/or test recommendations for products.
  • Research and identify relevant standards, regulations and requirements for new products for intended markets (domestic and international).
  • Act as primary liaison between project team, certification organizations and testing agencies to achieve regulatory certification compliance. This includes but is not limited to UL, CSA, TUV, IEC and ANSI.
  • Champion product safety considerations above and beyond regulatory standards or in areas with no clear standards.
  • Support continuous improvement at SLPE by leading development of tools, processes, forms and checklists that help teams accomplish goal of developing compliant, safe product lines on time and budget.
  • Investigate, develop, report and manage allocated project budget for certification, safety testing and cost analysis.
Education & Experience
  • Experience working with international product regulatory organizations such as UL, CSA, TUV, KEMA and ANSI.
  • Certification or training in product safety programs and testing is ideal.
  • Product development experience is preferred.
  • Experience with medical, test and measurement and lighting industry highly desirable.
  • Experience managing project budgets and schedules.
Skills & Abilities
  • Good verbal and written technical communication skills (specifications, technical writing, theory).
  • Utilizes metrics, Kaizens, RCCA and other methods to continuously review and improve existing processes.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness collaborating with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple projects/priorities.
